He owns a statewide practice and drives at least 50k miles a year (a lot I know, I have been telling him to drive less). But he needs a new or used car. He wants to buy a used car because he knows that he'll rack up the miles in no time. Right now he drives a Lexus ES and it has 185k miles on it. He wants to retire it because it is having some transmission issues. Anyone have any ideas? A used car, quiet and reliable is the biggest thing. Preferably 6 cylinder. Price doesn't matter as long as it is good.

Another Lexus, CPO maybe? The ES is still very comfortable for long drives.
Diesel Jetta? Would get better mileage, and since he drives so much he'd get his premium back more quickly.

Lmao. A reasonable price. I already tried for a F12.

I think that's what is going to happen. Another ES, or maybe a RX.
A diesel Jetta or perhaps a 535d. But I doubt he'll go for it, it needs to be super reliable. He can't be without his car, patients are a bitch to deal with.

F12 would've been just acceptable. What about a Phaeton?

If he was happy with the Lexus look at it and its competitors the TL or the Avalon I suppose.

How little of an issue is price? I mean, it's really hard to suggest something without at least a sense of the budget.
What year is the ES? Pre '12?
With answers to those questions, I could probably suggest something ?

The RX is also comfortable I'm told. (I work at a Lexus dealer. Typically, older people like the RX.)
Won't be quite so good on gas though. But, you can get AWD.

Under 40k. His car turnover is very high and he has to take a big hit when he sells it. the Lexus was a 08.

I think the Avalon is a good choice. It's pretty cheap these days. But sigh, probably another Lexus in the garage.

We live in Ohio, which basically experiences 12 seasons. A RX would be nice and high. I think we have a winner.

What? My parents live in Dayton, specifically in Centerville near the Lexus dealership. I'm in Columbus, I go to OSU.

I'll be THAT GUY:
5-12k gets you a nice one in good shape. Room for the family and hauling stuff, long gear ratios for long drives, reliable 5 cylinder. A turbo (!)
EDIT: Just avoid the 01-02 model. They have bad trannies. 03 and up is a wonderful long distance cruiser.

Extremely comfortable and reliable, and you can get 200,000 miles out of them for about $10,000.

That's where I work.
I don't actually sell cars. I'm one of our Product Specialists. I teach people how to use all the tech in their newly purchased vehicles.

I'll take one of each.

The Tesla would probably be awesome if there's Superchargers in his area. If he wants luxury, comfort, power, and fuel economy without sacrificing reliability? I'd go with the Kia. 100,000 mile warranty would last him 2 years.

Very nice. We might make a trip this weekend. lol. I'll be on the lookout for a Opponaut.

We don't have any SC'ers in our area. But we do have a 220v plug already installed in the house and I do think that there is a charging station in the Hospital that nobody uses. Also I don't know what the resale of the Kia would be after 150-185k miles. I would probably go with a Avalon. Though you're right a Tesla would be very cool.

I work at the new car store on Yankee. Our Pre-Owned building is on Lyons.
We have a few RX's over there. If your parents do buy from us, ask for Colin to do the "delivery" as we call it. I'd be happy to teach your parent's how to use the tech their Lexus.

Dat Benz diesel is supposed to be pretty reliable. And it's a good car for a doctor to drive. Nice but not so nice that it makes it look like he's charging too much.
